Book enthusiasts have something new to look forward to. Reedsy Discovery, a book review service that markets independently publish books, was recently launched by start-up publisher Reedsy. It allows users to preview chapters, browse suggestions, and share book insights with fellow readers who are interested in the same niche.
The service will draw from a pool of over one million independently published titles in the U.S in 2017, in contrast to the 300,000 titles published conventionally.
The start-up believes that Reedsy Discovery will be able to pick the best books through its machine learning algorithm coupled with human curation while fostering a community that is more welcoming compared to Amazon’s generated email recommendations.
Emannuel Nataf, Reedsy CEO and co-founder, gives his insights on which genre of indie books has the greatest potential of being noticed in the literary market.
1. Escapist Fiction
Fantasy genre leads in popularity on the Reedsy Discovery platform, with Sci-fi and romance following close behind, according to Nataf. He went on to highlight the rising appreciation for Escapist fiction.
Nataf’s observation supports the information that there is a rising appreciation for speculative fiction. As a matter of fact, from 2010 to 2017, sales for books under the genre retro horror, science fiction, and fantasy have doubled. This figure is notable especially for the fact that the huge rise can be attributed to indie ebooks, which make up 48% of the sales in the genres of sci-fi and fantasy and encompassing all formats.
2. YA Fiction
The YA (Young Adult) genre has always had a big following, even on Reedsy Discovery, and Nataf says it’s seen to rise even more this year. Nataf notes that even the free YA-oriented courses in their online writing and publication class Reedsy Learning ranks high in popularity.
And it’s not only teenagers who enjoy these YA books. A study conducted in 2012 revealed that more than half of YA readers are actually over the age of 18, and about 28% of the sales are accounted to those in the 30-44 age groups.
3. Non-fiction, Memoirs
The rise of the memoir genre on Reedsy Discovery mirrors most people’s belief that everyone has a great story to share through autobiographies. Nataf sees this as a good thing because it means there are plenty of people who are able to tell their stories and experiences for others to read and learn from.
